A classical Christian education should be like a stroll through a garden of delight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at kristen.blanford@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Wellspring Classical is a local, community-controlled, classical Great Books learning community committed to scholé: restful, attentive learning practiced in community. We exist to support homeschooling families by cultivating shared intellectual life, meaningful discussion, and a rhythm of learning rooted in truth, beauty, and goodness. Wellspring Classical is not a school in the traditional sense, and it is not a drop-off program. It is a community of families learning together with shared commitments and shared responsibility

Scholé (pronounced skoh-LAY) is a Greek word meaning restful learning. It is characterized by:

  • Undistracted time to study what is most worthwhile
  • Learning shaped by peace rather than pressure
  • Deep engagement with great texts

While the concept originated in classical Greece, it was deepened by the Christian tradition—especially in monastic centers of learning—into a form of education that is contemplative, ordered, and marked by Christian peace.

 A Wellspring Classical student:

  • is eager to learn, to know and to discover God's truth about the world (Proverbs 2:3-5)
  • shows humility and gratitude for the wisdom attained through learning
  • practices patience and constancy when lessons are challenging for themselves or others
  • doesn't leap forward in vain ambition or overreach, but chooses to master an art by taking small steps down the wise and proven path
  • shows respect for instructors and contributes to a learning environment where every student’s time, attention, and growth are valued
  • recognizes that their gifts, knowledge, and character are meant to serve God and bless others

Wellspring Classical exists to support homeschooling families, not to replace at-home instruction. Parents remain:

  • The primary educators of their children
  • Responsible for academic oversight and grading
  • Responsible for transcripts and graduation requirements

Our community provides shared reading, seminar discussion, and intellectual life so homeschooling is not isolated or fragmented.

Wellspring Classical follows a classical, Great Books model. Students engage with literature, philosophy, theology, and historical texts that have shaped Western civilization. These books are read in historical order and discussed deeply. Learning is interdisciplinary, discussion-based, and oriented toward character formation rather than mass subject coverage. We emphasize:

  • Reading fewer books carefully and thoroughly
  • Wrestling with enduring human questions
  • Developing clarity in thought and expression
  • Cultivating wisdom rather than information accumulation

We believe ideas have consequences and that what a culture believes about God, man, and the world shapes its: Literature and art; Music and architecture; Politics and law; Science and technology.

Rather than treating subjects as isolated silos, we intentionally make connections across disciplines so students can see how ideas echo through history and shape culture.

The idea of restful learning governs not only what we study, but how we structure our time. Wellspring Classical:

  • Builds sabbatical weeks into the academic calendar (4 weeks on, 1 week off)
  • Keeps days intentionally shorter
  • Resists academic overload
  • Protects margin for a well-balanced life for parents and students (good exercise, prayer, worship, family time and community contributions)

Wellspring Classical is a community of families learning together. Because we are not a drop‑off program and parents remain the primary educators of their children, our shared commitments shape the health, peace, and fruitfulness of our community. Wellspring parents partner with instructors and fellow families to cultivate an atmosphere where wonder leads, wisdom grows, and worship abounds.

Wellspring Classical Parents Commit to:

  1. Embrace their role as primary educators
  2. Honor shared commitments such as arrival times and community guidelines
  3. Participate in community life by offering help, prayer and encouragement as needs arise

We emphasize formation over quantification. Rather than numerical grades, we value:

  • Thoughtful discussion
  • Growth in reasoning and judgment
  • Clear communication
  • Faithful engagement with ideas

As homeschoolers, parents will remain responsible for all record-keeping and transcripts.  Instructors are

Wellspring Classical is rooted in the Christian faith, and our leadership joyfully reflects that foundation. While we warmly welcome families from a variety of faith traditions, we ask all participating families to sign our Statement of Beliefs. By signing, you acknowledge our guiding principles, agree to uphold our community expectations, and commit to hold back any views that conflict with the mission and unity of our program.

Scholé Academy is an online extension of our scholé-based classical education community, offering restful, rigorous learning in a live, relational setting. Scholé Academy provides:

  • Live, online, à la carte courses with peers
  • Private and personalized courses
  • Tutoring (for courses taken at Scholé Academy or elsewhere)
  • Support for students with learning differences
